WoodTracker

WoodTracker - Risk mapping for illegal logging

Geospatial platform that helps environmental agents target suspicious timber transport and extraction for closer investigation.

I participated in AmazôniaHack 2023 during the heyPermit discovery phase. I teamed up with some talented fellows and, we started with a practical question: can we figure out how much illegal logging is happening in the forests of Brazil? The outcome was WoodTracker, and even better, we won the first prize ! The app idea was to combine the areas where timber extraction is authorized or unauthorized with Brazil's DOF transport records. For each location, it estimates a suspected wood volume using the transported volume, the status of nearby areas, and their distance. We built an interactive map. Higher-risk points stand out, giving investigators a smaller set of places to check in detail.
